Mireia Miró participated this Saturday in the Italian Mezzalama, one of the iconic races in the ski mountaineering season. Teaming up with Laëtitia Roux and Gloriana Pelliser, the team was refereed as the favourite to win the race. However, Pelliser started to feel bad and she decided to stop the race in the first uphill. This forced her teammates to abandon the race.
After the race, MireiaMiró stated “I am very disappointed with the result, as it was very difficult for me to abandon a race for which I was very excited about. I was feeling very good, but this is sport and now is time to think on new goals. Mezzalama was, for me, one of the biggest events of the year, and I was hoping to at least it make it to the final line, but it wasn’t possible”.
Mezzalama is a very technical race, with part of the track being at more than 4000-meter altitude. This year is the 80th time this race will be held, making it one of the oldest ski mountaineering races in the world, dating back to before the two world wars.
Mezzalama was also the last race of the season for Mireia Miró, who is happy with the results she has achieved throughout the winter. The athlete won a silver medal in the world championships in Pelvoux, as well as three victories teaming up with Laëtitia Roux in the Grande Course circuit (Altitoy, PierraMenta and Adamello). With those three victories, the duo leads the classification of this 2-year ski competition. In addition, Mireia was in the podium ofthree races of the World Cup, even though it was not one of her main goals this season. Besides, Mireia won again the Spanish championship in Boi. In conclusion, this has been a very successful season for Mireia.
“I am very happy with this season. This is the third year for me competing at the highest level and I’ve achieved something that is the difficult for most skiers; keep the good results for this long. This is a big challenge and now that I look back I am very satisfied”, said Mireia.
