Spartathlon, one of the most famous ultrarunning events around the world, was held this year for 22nd time on Friday, 1st October. Over 183 athletes from 30 countries and 6 continents were present at the start line, under the holy rock of Acropolis and Parthenon Temple in Athens –the city that hosted the 2004 Olympic Games. Their objective was to endure, suffer and finish one of the most grueling renown ultrarunning road races. Spartathlon revives the heroic deed of messenger Fidippides, who on behalf of the Athenians, he ran some 246km– the distance from Athens to Sparta– to ask for the Spartans’ help in the war against the Persians (490 B.C.).
